Bio+Tech Past

A summary and recount of our past Bio+Tech gatherings:

#6: August 2010

Agenda: For August’s Bio+Tech gathering we welcome John Wilbanks, VP of Science for Science Commons. John will be talking about the open sourcing of biomedical data sets and tools and how that is altering and encouraging opportunities in the biomedical start-up scene.

Science Commons was created to leverage the movement of Creative Commons, which allows for the sharing of creative content on the web. Much the same, Science Commons, in conjunction with partners like Sage Bionetworks, is bringing that same open-type environment in to science. In my mind, this clearly creates new opportunities in to the biomedical start-up world and will help to continue to lower the hurdles to creating biomedical start-ups.

#3: March 2010

Agenda: This month Michael Shuster, a partner in Biotech IP at Fenwick & West, be briefly speaking about IP as it relates to biotech start-ups.  More specifically, in the tech world, while patents are still important, it’s widely recognized that execution is much more important to the ultimate success of a new business.  In biotech it’s the opposite – IP has been traditionally seen as key to a business’s competitive advantage and execution has somewhat taken a back seat.  In fact, IP issues often stifle networking and community – aspects that are the hallmark of the tech scene in Silicon Valley.  The economic and start-up environment has changed and Mr Shuster will discuss ways he’s seen new biotech companies respond to these changes by placing emphasis on executing plans rather than being solely concerned with IP issues.  He’ll also be speaking about ways to view IP to help promote community building here in the bay area and strengthen the biotech start-up environment here.

#2: February 2010

#1: January 2010

Agenda: This will be the first meetup for our group!  It will be a more “get to know you” and share your ideas for what the meetup can be and what topics we should cover in 2010.  We’re focusing not only on biotech and informatics, but what hte business and academic worlds have in store.  Looking forward to seeing you there!
